Species: STEWARTITE Locality: Palermo Mine, Pod #3, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.5 mm cluster of stewartite crystals Field Collected: Forrest Fogg Catalog No.: u2361 Notes: A visual ID based on the steep termination and lemon yellow color. Stewartite, Mn2+Fe3+2(PO4)2OH2 · 8H2O , and Laueite, Mn2+Fe3+2(PO4)2(OH) · 8H2O are dimorphs (identical chemistry) and similar in morphology. Stewartite twins show small "fish-tail" re-entry angles. Fishtail twins (rear center) are present in this photo. Both stewartite and laueite are triclinic, biaxial(-). |

Species: STEWARTITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 0.8 mm field of view Field Collected: Bob Whitmore - from a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob. Catalog No.: u2442 Notes: Habit and termination of these tiny yellow crystals suggests stewartite. Photo from a stack of 53 images, Nikon Plan 10 objective lens, Ping-pong ball diffuser, one second exposure for each shot! First try with direct LED lighting was sparkle city ! Jim Nizamoff opined that stewartite is the best guess for these tiny crystals, "I have seen similar occurrences in material I have collected or acquired through Bob. There is a chance that these could be something more interesting but as usual the chemistry will possibly determine that." |
